ON THE BALLOT: Re-Elect Judge Earle E. Wise, Jr. by Morgan Young

It's time to learn about the candidates on the November 08 ballot. This is a BIG election that will affect our daily lives. Meet Judge Earle E. Wise, Jr. up for re-election to the Ohio 5th District Court of Appeals.

Judge Earle E Wise Jr is running for re-election to the Ohio 5th District Court of Appeals in the November 08 General Election.

Judge Wise was first elected to the Court of Appeals in 2016. He has sat on the panel of 1,200 cases and has written 450 Opinions. In January, Judge Wise was unanimously selected as the court's presiding judge by the other judges on the court. He has also served as the Administrative Judge. Judge Wise was appointed by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court to sit as a visiting judge on the Ohio Supreme Court.

Of his position, Judge Wise says, “this is the best, most fulfilling, and hardest job I've ever had.”

Judge Wise says nonpartisanship and impartiality are “critical” for judgeship. He describes working with the other judges on the Court of Appeals as a “collegial atmosphere” where discourse and debate respectfully thrive.

Prior to his election, Judge Wise was a small business owner in private practice as an attorney in Stark and surrounding counties. He served as Assistant Public Defender in Carroll County. He was the City Administrator for the City of North Canton for five years and was an Assistant Stark County Prosecutor for eight years. Judge Wise’s extensive legal, military, and private sector experience provide him with a unique view of the court system and how it affects everyday Ohioans.

Judge Wise says, “Integrity is the coin of the realm; nothing is more important. The judicial system is ultimately based upon the trust of the public. The decisions must be based upon the facts of the case applied to the law…if the public loses faith in the integrity of the courts…the system would break down, and disputes could not be finally and peacefully resolved.” That is why he is running for re-election to the 5th District.

Judge Wise holds a JD from the University of Akron Law School. He worked as the Deputy Director of the Stark County Board of Elections while attending law school in the evenings. Prior to attending law school, he served as a bailiff for 5 years for Judge James S Gwin with the Stark County Court of Common Pleas. Judge Wise also served in the Ohio Army National Guard at the Akron-Canton Airport for seven years. For undergraduate school, he attended the College of Wooster, and earned a Bachelor's in History. His 2022 “Highly Recommended” rating by the Stark County Bar Association is the highest possible rating.

About the position:

The Ohio District Courts of Appeals are the intermediate appellate courts of the U.S. state of Ohio. Every case has a right to appeal. The Ohio Constitution provides for courts of appeals that have jurisdiction to review final appealable orders. There are twelve appellate districts, each consisting of at least one county, and the number of judges in each district varies from four to twelve. There are 6 judges in District 5, which serves 15 counties [Ashland, Coshocton, Delaware, Fairfield, Guernsey, Holmes, Knox, Licking, Morgan, Morrow, Muskingum, Perry, Richland (Mansfield), Stark (Canton), and Tuscarawas.] Each case is heard by a three-judge panel. A court of appeals judge is an elected position, with a term of six years. The Ohio Supreme Court has the discretion to review cases from the courts of appeals, but generally the appeals process in Ohio ends with the decision of the court of appeals.
